The palace of Versailles, 21 km south-west from Paris, is a royal castle that represented the political capital of France from 1682 to 1789 and was the opulent residence of French kings. The palace is surrounded by equally grand gardens overflowing with flowers, very tended hedges, statues and fountains. The skilled architects, landscape designers, sculptors and decorators who worked for several generations to the palace and gardens of Versailles became one of the estates most admired in the world.
Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, was the monarch of France from 1643 to 1715. In 1661 he moved to the royal court of Versailles, who previously served as a hunting lodge. He commissioned the architect Louis Le Vau and landscape designer André Le Nôtre to create a palace and garden that impressed the world and flaunted the power of the sovereign.
