Stonehenge is a Neolithic site located near Amesbury in Wiltshire, England, about 13 kilometers north-west of Salisbury. It is composed of a circular setting of large standing stones known as megaliths.
The stones of Stonehenge owe their current alignment to the reconstruction work in the first half of the twentieth century.
Assuming that the current alignment of the previous tracings, some claimed that Stonehenge represents an "ancient observatory," with a special meaning to the solstice and equinox points, although the extent of its use for this purpose is debated.
The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986.
